Ever wanted to customize the timescale or gridlines behind the chart, but can’t figure out how to access them with your cursor? Use the Selection Pane in Excel to temporarily turn off DefaultChart and PairedAxisChart as shown in the screenshot below. Now you can click on BackChart objects and apply custom formatting however you like.

(The Selection Pane feature is found in all Microsoft Office products – we’ve found it especially helpful in PowerPoint.)

Note: custom formatting of BackChart objects will be lost if the chart is subsequently redrawn for changes to either axis. But it’s still a good option if you want to put some finishing touches on your schedule before you print.
